In Los Angeles, California, a gang of bank robbers call themselves The Ex-Presidents. commit their crimes while wearing masks of ex-Presidents Reagan, Carter, Nixon, and Johnson. The F.B.I. believes that the members of the gang could be surfers, and send young
Agent Johnny Utah undercover at the beach to mix with the surfers and gather information. Utah meets surfer Bodhi, and gets drawn into the lifestyle of his new friend. Johnny Utah (Keanu Reeves) is a Special Agent for the F.B.I. Utah gets partnered with Angelo
Pappas (Gary Busey), an experienced Agent, who is more than committed to his work. The two are asked to investigate the number of robberies committed by a group called The Ex-Presidents, who wear masks of former Presidents Reagan, Nixon, Carter, and Johnson
for their robberies. Pappas has a theory that The Ex-Presidents are a group of surfers, and asks for Utah to go undercover as a surfer. The problem is, Utah couldn't surf to save his life. That, plus the two continuously being hassled by unpleasant and rough
Agent Harp (John C. McGinley). With the help of Tyler (Lori Petty) a competent female surfer, Utah begins to gain the respect of local surfer Bodhi (Patrick Swayze) and his group. Utah forms a close bond with Bodhi, but the relationship between Utah and Bodhi
becomes limited when Utah suspects that Bodhi and his group are The Ex-Presidents. An amazing concept, and beautifully executed by all involved. The writer and the director used soul and passion to create a memorable experience. Patrick Swayze shined to the
point of brilliance as a charismatic surfing guru with a lack of moral compunction.
The chase scene will endure as an example of pure adrenaline, and the battle between one man's obsession with freedom and another's desire to capture him.
I am not exactly sure why they chose a short-haired, flat-chested actress for the female lead. I suppose it may take a tomboy to be a surfer.
I have read opinions that there was some kind of underlying homosexuality related to the Keanu Reeve's character's relationships with both the tomboy, and the Swayze character. I didn't pick up on that. But I think the movie would have been sexier with a more voluptous female lead, who wasn't a surfer.
My one criticism has to do with a lack of dialogue about morality. Swayze gives an impressive and memorable speech about the joys of bank robbing and the corollary feeling of power, but someone should have asked his character if he ever felt guilty about terrorizing innocent people and stealing their money.
The ending was epic, if predictable. I loved this movie despite any comic-book aspects, or perhaps because of them. On the terms of its concept alone, "Point Break" sounds farcical. When the bad guys aren't waving around revolvers and yelling at bank tellers, they're riding waves, playing night football on the beach . . . and going skydiving. And during quieter moments, Patrick Swayze waxes philosophically about the energy of the ocean, and the ego-checking Mother Earth likes to dole out when we get too full of ourselves. And Keanu Reeves is the FBI agent out to bust them. And his name is Johnny Utah. You can't make this stuff up, but someone did(!) and that's what makes it so fun. The movie plays this nonsense completely straight and it all comes together surprisingly (criminally?) well.
And it's a pretty damn good action movie, which is icing on the cake.
8/10 Director Kathryn Bigelow is one of the new-style action wizards who’ve never quite mastered the nuts and bolts of telling a story. Tapping the Source (1984), a novel by Kem Nunn, provided the inspiration for Point Break. It's called "Hundreds of Tears" by Sheryl Crow. Yes. There's likely no way a surfer as experienced as Bodhi could survive it. Bodhi even says earlier in the film when he describes the storm at Bell's Beach and how big the waves will be that surfing the break will be the "ultimate price". Bodhi had basically wished to die in a glorious manner and he did.
